As a first choice, WindowStrong recommends Comfort Design patio and French doors to our clients, because—just like us—they’re focused on providing you with the most bang for your buck. CDI also offers an unparalleled warranty on each and every door they manufacture, as well as a lifetime guarantee that transfers to the new owner of your home for a period of five years.

On top of this, Comfort Design is a locally owned company, which means that we can typically have your new doors in hand in less time than the competition. And it doesn’t hurt that we have a great working relationship with them as well!

Door Types & Options

As simple as it may seem, choosing a door often involves a wide variety of factors. Where will the door go? Are you more interested in design or function? Standard or custom? Sliding or hinged? But don’t get overwhelmed. Instead, read on to learn everything you need to know.

Styles:

French

When choosing French doors, you’ll have three options: Sliding, in-swing, and out-swing. While the sliding option is relatively new, it is becoming an increasingly popular choice for customers who want the space saving profile of traditional sliding doors, but the thicker trim and visual appeal of French doors. Most installations will use in-swing doors, while areas with space constraints will often need out-swing.

Garden

While the terms “Garden,” “Patio,” and “French” can be used interchangeably, Garden/Patio doors tend to slide on a track, and French doors tend to use hinges. However, as we noted above, some manufacturers now offer sliding “French” doors, so this isn’t always the case.

Garden doors tend to be less expensive than French doors, but usually offer many of the same space-saving benefits, as well as increased light penetration. However, because the glass is comprised of one single pane, in addition to the fact that there isn’t a deadbolt in place, this means Patio doors are best in areas where security is not a concern.

Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that Comfort Design patio doors can also be fitted with a sturdy and lightweight pet flap, which provides your four-legged friend the indoor/outdoor lifestyle they crave, while providing you with no-mess cleanup. In addition, if you’re looking for something a little more substantial, Comfort Design also offers a dog cover. This cover gives your furry companion the ability to come and go as they please, which can then be slid into place when it’s time to keep out uninvited guests.

Note: French and Patio/Garden windows are typically ordered the same time as windows. However, we’ll be happy to place separate orders if that better fits your needs.

Frame Materials:

Wood

Although wood framed doors lend outstanding warmth to your home and can be stained any color you need, they typically require more maintenance than other materials. With this in mind, a properly maintained wood patio door can provide years of reliable service.

Vinyl

Vinyl is often the most durable patio door material, as it doesn’t absorb moisture, warp, or crack. Regardless of the climate in which you live, vinyl doors are an inexpensive option that can maximize energy efficiency while reducing the need for maintenance.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass patio doors typically combine the best of wood and vinyl. This is because fiberglass doors can be made to look like wood (visually and texturally), while avoiding nearly all the maintenance concerns associated with them.

Aluminum

With a combination of strength, value, and a high level of customization, aluminum patio doors can be tailored to suit almost any need. Whether you’re looking for a simple door that’s resistant to rust and mildew, or a fully customized glass wall system, aluminum has the ability to deliver.

Entry Doors

Entry doors are often the most ornate, and can completely make—or break—the look of your home’s exterior, as well as its entryway. Because of this, you’ll want to choose your entry door carefully. Here are some points to consider:

  • What’s your budget? This is the most important factor, as entry doors can vary in price greatly. By establishing your budget first, you can hone in on exactly what you need, and eliminate those that are out of your price range.
  • What’s your preferred style? What materials do you favor? From a utilitarian steel door to an ornate mahogany masterpiece, choose the style and material that complements your home’s design, and also meets your maintenance requirements.
  • What options would you like?In addition to price, style, and material, entry doors also come with a whole host of other options, such as glass styles, door knobs, locks, hinges, and more.

The Door Installation Process

WindowStrong’s door installation process is very similar to the one we use for windows. First, we’ll place an order with the manufacturer and should have your doors in hand within 2-4 weeks.
